St Augustine Civil Rights Sites Meeting

Securing National Register recognition for St. Augustine locations associated with the Civil Rights Movement is a big step toward preserving those sites and their significance. But just to file the nomination takes a lot of work, including a complete inventory of all buildings and sites to be included in the National Register.

A public meeting regarding the efforts to secure this prestigious listing will be held on Thursday, April 27 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Willie Galimore Center, 399 Riberia St. For an informational flyer, click here.

The effort to secure that inventory just got a big boost from a $50,000 grant awarded to the city by the Florida Division of Historical Resources. The resulting Multiple Property Listing will be an essential part of the city’s nomination to have site associated with the St. Augustine Civil Rights Movement listed in the National Register of Historical Places.

The nomination will provide a comprehensive record of St. Augustine’s Civil Rights Movement in the National Register and recognize the history of the buildings and sites connected with the historical event and those that contributed to the movement.

In addition, it will document the impact of St. Augustine’s local movement on the national Civil Rights Movement in terms of the media coverage for the City’s 400th anniversary celebration and related civil rights protests, as well as visitation from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference that prompted the passage of the Civil Rights Act on June 20, 1964.

St. Augustine Foot SoldiersThe city’s efforts are building on the success of others who have worked to commemorate local Civil Rights sites, including site markers erected by the Civil Rights Committee of St. Augustine, public monuments such as the Andrew Young Crossing and Foot Soldiers which are both located in the Plaza de la Constitución, the 40th ACCORD Freedom Trail with website and markers, and the city produced exhibit, Journey, that celebrated African American History Month in 2014.

While a consultant will be retained to conduct the necessary research and documentation for this nomination working with city staff, public outreach and engagement will be a crucial component of the project

Already there are plans for several public meetings to discuss the purpose of the project and engage with individuals who have personal experience from the movement as a method of researching the proposed sites. Neighborhood associations, non-profit organizations, and relevant citizen boards from the City of St. Augustine and St. Johns County will also be invited to weigh in on the nomination.
