Licensing Procedures for New Business

The first step in obtaining a business license is to have a physical address in mind that is within the city limits of St. Augustine. Once you decide on a location before signing a contract please call our Business Tax Receipt Administrator at 904-209-4324 to discuss the next steps in helping you obtain your license.

If you are changing the use of the current space or if it has been vacant for over 6 months you will need to go to a Friday Review.

To register for a Friday Review meeting you will need to fill out our Friday Review Application. Along, with this application we will need a floor and site plan to scale. Note: If you are a Food Truck business, be sure to review the Food Truck Requirements. The fee for this application is $20.00. The deadline to register for a Friday Review is always the Friday before.

At the Friday Review meeting you will get comments from our Building Official, Fire Marshal, Deputy Director of Planning and Building, Director of Planning and Building, Public Works, and City Attorney.

Our office is located on the 4th Floor in the Lightner Museum (75 King St.), Lobby B and opens at 8:00am. The Friday Review meeting starts at 8:30am on a first come first serve basis. There will be a sign in sheet at the front counter.

For business license renewals please contact customer service at 904-825-1034. If you are requesting a change of location for your business or a change in mailing address you will need to fill out a new business license application available in the Planning and Building Department.

For a home office (private) you will need to have your business name registered on Sunbiz.org, if you are not using your legal name as the business name. This must be done before we can process your business license application. If you are renting please have a note signed by your landlord confirming they approve of you operating a home office (private) at the residence.

When you are ready to fill out a business license application we will need a copy of your driver’s license and your Sunbiz information.

Sunbiz.org allows you to register your business name through the State of Florida. Please refer to their website if you have any questions pertaining to this step of the process.
